Running to the Roar – Leadership in Sports and Business

On Tuesday, October 2nd, Irish Network Boston co-hosted “Running to the Roar – Leadership in Sports and Business”. The event was a joint production with our friends from the UCD Alumni group, BIBA and the Irish American Partnership and featured a star-studded panel moderated by former New England Revolution and US Mens National Team player, Charlie Davies. Dublin football legend Dessie Farrell, current Dublin footballer and new GPA CEO Paul Flynn, New England Revolution President Brian Bilello and former BC Women’s Ice Hockey Captain and current lawyer/lobbyist Kristen Leary from Leary Ventures comprised the panel. A fascinating evening covered myriad topics related to leadership in Sports and Business and the attributes needed to succeed in both.

What’s with the Shamrocks?

Sean Moynihan discusses the history of the St.Patricks Day shamrock at the White House.

Each year the Irish Prime Minister (An Taoiseach) visits the White House on or around St. Patrick’s Day for what has become known as the Shamrock Ceremony, where he presents a Waterford Crystal bowl filled with shamrock to the President of the United States in recognition of the two countries special bond. The official exchange and photo op is joyfully followed by a festive reception for guests at the White House. The festivities actually begin much earlier in the day with a sit down St. Patrick’s Day lunch. This tradition began, on a much smaller scale, during the Truman administration when, in 1952, the Irish Ambassador to the US John Hearne dropped off a box of shamrock plant to the White House. Ironically President Truman was not home at the time but rather on vacation.
